It's a long shot, but try a scandisk.  I once found a whole folder of stuff
suddenly went AWOL for no reason, there was absolutely no sign of it
anywhere.  It turned up as a .chk file after running scandisk.  It's about
the only time I can recall scandisk ever doing anything useful.
