A banner ad is just a graphic image that is hyper-linked to another site.

There is not difference between a banner ad and other graphics.  Typically
they are animated GIF images that can be designed with any graphics
program such as:
    Adobe Photoshop   http://www.adobe.com
    Paint Shop Pro       http://www.jasc.com/
    Ulead Gif animator  http://www.ulead.com/
                                   http://www.webutilities.com/
    Fireworks          http://www.macromedia.com/

Usually, a banner ad is 468 pixels wide by 60 pixels high, (or some
variation close to that size).  A banner ad image can reside on
your web site or downloaded from another site.  There are Internet
advertising companies that place their client's ads on your web site with
a structured compensation program, such as: http://www.burstmedia.com/
Everytime their code is pulled up on your web page, a new image appears
from their company, (downloaded from their website), for one of their clients.

You can also sell advertising on your site to companies and build your
own banner ads linking back to your client's web site...  or use a graphics
image they have created.
