I don't know how to turn it off, but you what I tell people at work is to
do a Control-Z right after the program makes the change.  That is the
keyboard shortcut for undo, and it simply tells the program to undo the
auto formatting.

As Jim said in an earlier post if you give us the program we can probably
tell you how to permanently turn it off, mine is just a temporary workaround.
