Rick -- Your "way back" memory seems to be correct.
This is the time of year when my NAV subscription expires on various PCs.
The notifications do start a month ahead of time. If you renew within that
period (IOW, before the sub expires), you will get a year from the day of
the original expiration date. No days are "lost" by renewing in advance.
On one PC, I let the definitions expire (by about a week). When I renewed
that one, it extended the sub for one year from the date I did the renewal.
There was no "penalty" for the week that I was not signed up...
I don't know why your correspondent said they only got a 5 day notification;
perhaps someone else has been seeing the message on this particular PC and
just clicking "ignore"? Or, could it be that NAV is not set to auto-start?
If it's not running all the time, it certainly wouldn't be giving you the
renewal notice.
