Jim's point is well taken - it's always best to use the right tool for the
job. However, regarding your example, yes, Word is like using a sledge
hammer - does what it was made to do but is big, heavy, and awkward. I'm not
trying to start a "word processor war" here, but WordPerfect is a nice handy
hammer, big enough for "almost" any job and doubles as a Swiss Army knife as
well! I'll agree that there are some tasks made easier by a dedicated layout
program such as PageMaker or Ventura, but for DTP on a budget, WordPerfect
is hard to beat, and has been for over 10 years.
I've done word processing and document preparation on a large production
scale, and I still regret the day WP was sold to Corel - not that Corel is a
bad company, but because they are Canadian-owned and therefore gov't
contractors (at least on the DOE site where I worked) where not allowed to
purchase from them - what did that leave but M$? Word was (and probably
still is - I haven't used 2000 extensively yet) years behind in being able
to handle long documents, graphics, etc.
