I am running an E machine T1440 with Windows XP home edition., 256 K RAM.

I went into the Microsoft Windows XP update area and had it search my
computer for any needed updates. The site advised that I needed several but that I
had to download a service pack first and then go back and search again for any
remaining updates. I could then click to have those downloaded.

After the service pack (I believe it was service pack 1) downloaded, I went
back in and search for the remaining needed updates. They listed and I click
to have them downloaded. When the downloading was complete the window advised
that there were several that could not be downloaded and installed. A new
window came up advising me to restart my computer, which I did.

When the computer attempted to reboot, after a short Logo screen, I received
a Winlogon Exe message advising "Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry
point AssocIsdangerous could not be located in the dynamic library
SHLWAPI.dll." When i clicked on the OK button, I then received a User Interface Failure
window advising "The logon user interface DLL.msgina.dll failed to load.
Contact your system administrator to replace the DLL or restore the original dll."
My only option at this window is to click a button that is "restart." If
that is done, the whole sequence repeats.

If I shut the computer down and turn it back on I, sometimes, get a screen
allowing me to choose which mode of windows to start in but every selection I
make takes me back to the original sequence.

Any help to save this thing without using the restore disks would be
appreciated.
