AOL is trying to reduce the volume of spam that their customers get.
They've done several things in that effort that I don't think they've
properly understood, and I believe that eventually they will realize that
they're blocking legitimate mail and not really helping with the spam, and
clean up their act.
In the meantime, I suggest you encourage your AOL friends to get free web-
based email accounts from GMail (Google), Yahoo, HotMail, or whomever, and
use those to receive mail from non-AOL folks.
