This happened on my new Win 7 install with IE 8.0
Under Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings, uncheck
"Automatically Detect Settings". It worked for me. I also use FF  most of
the time, but it wasn't affected. I installed FF after IE, though, and that
may have had something to do with it.
