You may have a couple of things going on here.

First, the File Association with "Folder"  probably is set to "Search" as
the default action (and not "Open").  That would explain the Search opening
and also why Search is bolded when you right click.  Also Windows Explorer
is probably set to "Single click to open" which would initiate the Search
default.

To fix:  Under Tools, Folder Options, File Associations tab, highlight
Folder (not File Folder) and click on the Advanced button.  Then highlight
"explore" in the bottom window and then click on "Set as default".  That
should get you back to exploring again.
