Your experience is very similar to mine.  I've been having a time with ME.  Now, most of the time, my
computer will shut down properly.  About half the time, it will not boot up without getting "Illegal
Operation" and having to reboot several times.  I've had to use ME's restore to a previous day many
times.  This morning, it booted okay.  Last night it didn't.  It probably won't this afternoon.  And
this happens even though I don't do anything in between other than check my e-mail.  Several of my
programs don't work anymore.  The companies say, "Sorry, we don't support ME."  Today, if I have
time, I reckon I'm going to restore 98SE.  I have given up with ME.
