I have always used the ASCII table for this. On my computer I get £ by
holding down the ALT key and typing 156 on the NUM pad ( num lock on). I
use ± a lot  and this is ALT and 241 on the NUM pad.  If you find an
ASCII table, you will have the key to all kinds of things. Just use the
number in the DEC ( decimal) column combined with the ALT key.
