Paula:
As shipped, Win95 (and possibly later versions) was optimized to work on an
Ethernet network. However, some of the transmission parameters do not deliver
optimum performance when used on an ordinary dial-up connection. While braver
souls might be happier meddling with their registry settings, there are a
number of programs that will do the dirty work for us timid types. Among them
are TweakDUN v3.0, available at www.pattersondesigns.com/tweakdun/, and
MTU-Speed v4.10, available in the downloads section of freepctech.com.
(TweakDUN is now freeware; previous versions were shareware.)
My experience has been that these programs provide a slight, but noticeable,
improvement in performance. At 56K, every little bit helps.
