<<<< The moment I try to get something off the web, I get
Microsoft error messages that say: Send or Don't Send when I click on a box
saying there is an error. I get sent back to my home page every time.>>>>

Hi,

ok,here goes.

"my home page"---is this something you have set by choice , or is it that of the friend who gave the machine to you or, is it the address of some website which forces itself on you whenever you try to access the internet?

to find out click on "tools" in internet explorer tool bar at the top of the browser, then click "internet options".the very first box "home page" will have (1)use current (2)use default (3)use blank. click on the "use blank" button and then ok your way out. now try to open the internet explorer with being connected to the internet. if your browser opens with "about blank" in the address bar then it should be ok. but your description of the problem suggests that it will not be so and you will go back to your home page whatever it is.

if so then (i strongly suspect this to be the case) in computer jargon "your browser has been hijacked". this is a difficult problem and the level of difficulty depends on what caused the hijack. but there are fixes available though it will take days because you will have to be guided on line by experts and you will have to follow the instructions of them. should not be very difficult and the best part is it will add to your experience.

before we attempt this i suggest you click start/settings/control panel/add-remove programs and browse to internet explorer and highlight this and click remove. you will be presented with two options (1)remove (2) repair. try the repair and after the process is over ok it and go through the process of rechecking by opening the browser. if no luck and you are in the same problem then try the "remove option". here what will happen is win 98 will ask you whether you wish to revert to an earlier version of internet explorer. say yes/ok and after the process is over recheck again by trying to connect to the internet.

sometimes note only SOMETIMES this clears up things.

incidentally i hope you have cleared all temporary files in internet explorer as suggested by one of the members in reponse to your earlier post. this is very important.

if none of the above works post back to the forum and you will surely be guided further.

as to your query to change to win xp pl note that there is no guarantee that you will not have the same problem again. the only guarantee against this problem is very prudent browsing habits and good firewall/antispyware software.

costwise i can not say anything without knowing the hardware of your current machine but if you are thinking of a new machine , both Thomas Mayer and Hugh Vandervoort have given a lot of details.

personally i would wait for "VISTA" and try my best to correct the internet explorer problem (assuming you are happy with the current system except for this). finally it is not that difficult to remove the hijacker but takes time and patience.

PS:-Click on help in internet explorer and click "about internet explorer".

you will get details of the version. post it to the forum.
