From the DOS Prompt? There is no DOS in Windows XP. There is no Scandisk
in XP. There is a true 32 bit command line that is very powerful and
similar to Linux or UNIX command line and there is a Chkdsk command that
works much differently then Scandisk.
Of course, if your file system is FAT, or FAT32, instead of NTFS, than you
can boot off a Windows 98 floppy, and then run DOS Scandisk. Just make sure
scandisk is in your path and type Scandisk. To see the various switches
type C:>Scandisk /? To output the switches to a text file type
C:>scandisk /? c:\scandisk.txt
Windows 2000, XP Chkdsk does not run in Windows XP the same way Scandisk
does in Win9X. This is because NT,2000, and XP will not allow software to
directly access hardware. Chkdsk can inspect while in Windows, but it can't
fix anything, and it can't perform a disk surface scan. You have to
schedule that to take place during boot up.
If you want Scandisk to check and report to a text file then use this
command at the command line
chkdsk > disklog.txt
However, it is easier just to open Windows Explorer File Manager. Select
the Drive in the left hand pane. Right click, select properties, select the
Tools Tab, and then press Start .... if you check the repair box or the
surface scan box then Windows will ask you if you want to schedule an
inspection during the next boot up. If you don't check the boxes and you
press start ....and if finds errors it will ask you to schedule a repair
during boot up.
