Anna,
You are absolutely correct.Sometimes or very often, the conversion from
M$ .doc format isn't as you would like.
A lot depends on the complexity or formatting of the document
and of course on the conversion "engine" of the converter.
I know it's a bit time consuming, but I usually recommend to try out
a number of free doc-2-pdf converters as well as the trial versions
of the shareware ones,to see which best converts your type of documents.
Most converters handle simple documents OK,it's the highly formatted
ones that may give trouble.
Arguably, Adobe might give the best results but at a high price.

To answer your question about Open Office - I couldn't say if it will
convert your documents better than, let's say 995PDF or Primo PDF,
or for that matter, the one I suggested- Easy PDF Converter 6.
(Plus may others)
Again,it depends on the complexity of your Word documents
and probably also which version of Word (or Office) you use.
It seems that sometimes it's a case of trial and error.
In the case of shareware, you may get more support for certain issues
with the software.
However to the credit of many freeware authors,I have to say that
I sometimes had more support from them than from the shareware companies.
That's the best I can do for now.

BTW,did you ever get my PM about the fonts site?

Peter E.

Peter, I sometimes find that Win2PDF conversions are not as clear as the
original Word document. Does Open Office create a CLEARER PDF?

Thanks,
Anna
