There's a couple of things I'd like to know in order to help out:
What is the address of the document?
What is the operating system?
Any Word processing program will open text documents, so try Word or WP if
you have them available.
I seem to be the only fan of Dr. Watson on this list, but it can be very
effective with these problems.
Go to Start/Run. Enter drwatson, click OK.
Try to open the document again. If you encounter the illegal op again, Dr.
Watson will gather some info about the error. Click the details icon when it
is finished, and let us know what it says-just the filename or other message
involved, not the
hieroglyphics.

I've been trying to open a text document that was posted on a friend's
website, but after I download the document, and select Wordpad to view it,
it get the good old "illegal operation" message. I tried using Notepad but
it says the document is too large for Notepad. I don't have any other
program that will open text documents. I did a scan disk and defrag, but
that didn't help. I went to Windows Setup in Add/Remove Programs, and
deselected and reselected Wordpad, but that didn't uninstall/reinstall it.
