You can also go directly into Windows Services (StartAdministration/Services) and disable it. I have disabled many services for security reasons. AnnaSummers

Dottie,
I have always been plagued with "pop-ups" using windows messenger, till I
downloaded a free program called "ShootTheMessenger". It's now one of the
first programs I load on a fresh system. It's an easy, small program that
allows a simple one-click able/disable. It adds an extra icon on my desktop but I
find that a small price to pay.
As the pthers have said, I don't know if you may be running something
that requires Messenger, but if something does come up that you need it, it's
easily re-activated.
My dial-up is being difficult today so I'm having trouble connecting to
the authors site. But if you do a search for Shoot the Messenger, you will
find several download sites.
HTH,

Hi Dottie,
No you're not "married" to Windows Messenger .<grin>
There are a couple of ways to do it.
The following links will give you the methods - use whichever is
clearest to you.

The Windows Messenger Icon is displayed on my task bar and since I NEVER
use Messenger I would like to remove it. When I right click on the icon
and then click "exit" I get the following message:
"There are other applications currently using features provided by
Windows Messenger. You must close these other applications before you
can exit Windows Messenger. These applications may include Outlook,
Outlook Express, MSN Explorer and Internet Explorer."
I went to the control panel (add/remove) but Messenger does not appear
in the list of programs. I thought I could remove it that way.
Does this mean I am married to Windows Messenger and have to live with
it even it I don't use it? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
Dottie Hoch
