Earl,

The BeOS is an alternative operating system for
Intel-based architectures (including AMD and Cyrix)
that was designed from the ground up to handle
multimedia applications and data. It, and more
information on it, is available at www.be.com. There
is a downloadable version of the program available for
free for Windows 9x users to give the operating system
a try. One of the biggest things that you will find is
a lack of a critical mass of software (wordprocessors,
office suites, off the shelf shrinkwrap software,
etc.) avaialable for the OS and a shift in the
user-interface paradigm.

That being said, I am a PC hobbyist and I'm intrigued
by this kind of stuff. The BeOS will install on a
multitude of hardware configurations without a whole
lot of incidents. However, if it doesn't, it can be
"fun" to figure out the problems during installation
and subsequent operations.

I'm not sure how much benefit an operating system like
BeOS is too the casual user.

Just wondering: Are you having a problem on your
current machine that prompted you to field this
question?
