  This is a hardware, rather than a software, answer, but I use and
like a similar device.  I have a Y-cable plugged into the sound card,
with the external volume control and speakers plugged in one side,
and a set of headphones (with volume control) in the other.  As long
as it's producing reasonable quality, I never touch the software
volume control.
