Well, it could be caused by corrupted windows, or some sort of software
conflicts, you may fix it by doing a XP repair or remove some suspected
apps. The worst, you may need to re-install XP.
It could also be problem with hardware, eg. bad RAM, or a faulty
motherboard.
without very detailed info on all your software (patch, and version #),
hardware, drivers version (and how they were installed) ... even how is
airflow inside case, it is very hard to identify what kind of problem it is.
At least, you can try windows update, there are already many patches
released to fix XP problems (eg. issue with DVD playback, CD burning,
graphics rendering)
