I had the same problem recently, unable to use Windows Update. I tried
everything I could find on Knowledge base, as well as patch that the error
message suggested. Nothing worked. I did a Windows reinstall on top of my
current install, and the problem went away. In retrospect, I was thinking I
should have tried the "system file checker" in the "Microsoft Information
Tool" (Accessories->System Tools).
