The problem is solved thanks to a couple of private replies that set me on the right path. The primary logon service was windows logon. I tried resetting the already blank password to blank again, removing the password file and reinstalling a blank password, removing Client for Microsoft Networks, to no avail. I ended up just removing Network Neighborhoods altogether and, Voila, problem solved and no repercussions so far. I had no use for NN anyway, so no loss. The main lesson I learned was do one update or patch at a time. Had I done that I could have identified which change caused the problem and corrected it at that point. Thanks
