Bob, the contol panel icon for modems should have a check box in there
somewhere that allows you to turn off the modem sounds. OR, You can program
the modem, if you know the communications port number for it, by opening a
dos window, and typing

echo ATM0&W > com2

where the 0 is a zero, and the modem's number (1,2,3, or 4) is substituted
for the 2. Control Panel, modems, properties will show you the port number.
After you press enter, the next line should read OK as the modem accepts and
responds to the programming command. That's it. Change the command to M1
to restore the sound to the way it was before.

Am using Windows 98 and hear a "handshake" sound when using dial-up
networking to go on line. Recently up-graded from Win 95 and seems like I
was able to have this sound suppressed in 95 but not sure how it was done.
Any suggestions on how to suppress sound appreciated.

TIA
Bob
