Are you referring to Geographic Information System? My "shallow"
understanding of it is that it is a spatial representation of any
information that one has collected. Thus, if you a data, for instance,
and you point it on a map, you have a sort of a 'geographic info'.
A database program (e.g. Access) and a GIS software usually complement
each other.
