Gerry,

With such a vague description, I'm afraid all you will
get are wild guesses. We need more information before
we can give you any kind of meaningful answer.
Remember, we can't look over your shoulder and see
what is happening. <grin>
You need to be our eyes and ears.

What version of Windows are you using?

Have you ever been able to view MPGs?
If so, when did it stop working?
What program were you using when it worked? Win MediaPlayer?
Is the program still installed on your PC?
Is Windows set up for multimedia?

When you try to open an MPG file......
How do you try to open it?
Is it a file you have saved to your hard drive and are opening
    from inside the windows explorer?
Is it a link on a web page you are viewing and if so, which
    web browser?
Or are you trying to open it from inside some movie player program?
    and which one is it?
When you try to open the MPG, what happens?
Is there an error message? What is it?
Does a program open? if so, what program?
     Does the computer lock up?

The more details you can provide, the more accurate our anwer will be.

Jim Meagher
