Norton has (always had) a couple remover programs for cleaning up
a system that is "trashed -- Norton-wise"...
They have always worked for me in the time frame and vintage you are referring to.
I used to have a "search word string" for the Norton site that brought up the proper
section of their on-line help... (Have not done this in a while so I guess they have
gotten better in later versions...)
It can be a complex and time consuming process...
(As much as four hours if it also involves some sort of infestation...)
