Your work computer is _terribly_ out of memory and most propably alo CPU
speed.
from Microsoft XP minimum system requirements for XP Pro ( and Home )

 - PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed
recommended;
233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD
K6/Athlon/Duron family,
    or compatible processor recommended
 - 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum
supported; may
     limit performance and some features)
 - 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*
 - Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
 - CD-ROM or DVD drive
 - Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/sysreqs.asp

In other words it is like when i tested Win 95 on 4MB computer. OS worked
but sart any
application make it very low, HD sarts run and never stopped. Your
resources are for
OS only , mayby also Notepad. Your hard disk runs because when Windows are
not enough
memory then its swaps part of memory to disk and when this part needed loads
it again to
memory.

Upgarding to 128 MB helps much but thre will be delays with some programs. I
would recommend
to upgrade to 256 MB memory or go back to Win 98.
