What about when the sounds you hear sound like mike placed in the corner of
a room, faint voices heard on login???
(WIN98, McAfee Anti-Virus/Firewall, modem connection).  Not sure how to
check for modem settings.

Jim, it could be your modem. Check if the roaring sound is when you are
connecting to the Internet. The modem will have a setting which will
