I have a certain Mother Board that sometimes to "hate"
serial mice of any brand.
IT was designed with PS/2 mouse ports.
I had serial mice (all new) that I wanted to "use up"...

When I switched to PS/2 mice, the problems went away.

A side note also... I tried the old trick of loading a mouse driver in DOS
during the boot so Windows could "Grandfather" the real mode mouse
into Windows and transition it to a protected mode driver...
It worked that way for three weeks, and suddenly pitched a fit.
A General Windows Protection Error - Re-install Windows...
(I did NOT, since I knew where the problem originated...)

Take all the above at face value as an account of personal experiences.

And yes, it "IS" possible to navigate by keyboard, but might take too
long to learn. That is a "very" difficult process to explain in e-mail.

Good luck, Rick Glazier
