A friend lost his taskbar desktop icon and has not been able to recover it.  I'm not familiar with Win ME so
I'm passing his plight on to the experts.  He is running a HP Pavilion XE783 with ME.  He said the icon
disappeared from his taskbar and he had not installed any new programs or made any operating changes.  He
wondered if using the recovery CD would reconfigure his computer to the factory configuration and he would
lose all information and programs he installed.

Your friend's recovery cd will format the hard drive - that should be the very last option in any situation.
If he has TweakUI installed, tell him to run it from the control panel and find the 'Repair' tab. Then choose
'Rebuild Icons' and hit 'Repair now'. This will only solve the problem if it is an icon issue. If the program
has become corrupt or removed, he has several options, but the best option may simply be to use the 'Restore'
option and restore his PC to a time before the desktop icon went missing. hth
