Elizabeth,
The best way is to use 'finger' i.e. "finger [log in to unmask]", using e-mail
address of the person you are trying to look up. You can finger from UNIX
shell, use a third party program i.e. WS Watch, or use web gateway to finger.
Unfortunately for security reasons 'finger' is disabled on most of the mail
servers :( .
Some e-mail directories allow reverse lookup and my favorite
http://pic2.infospace.com/info/reverse.htm is one of them.
You can also use any search engine and search on the given e-mail address as a
string. Very often it is the only way to find information about the owner of
e-mail address.
