Dear Bob,
Just as Hal (and others did) I too ditched Norton some years ago
(that was on an IBM ThinkPad). I went with AVG and have never
regretted it. I would do what others have recommended, i.e. uninstall
Norton completely and go with your favoured utilities.
Regarding IBM's advice, keep in mind that they'll still claim it's
not really their problem but rather Microsoft / Norton's, even if you
keep Norton. See no reason why you feel forced to use Norton (IBM's
not insisting you stick with it) and I would go with the option to
use the utilities you like and have used elsewhere.
