(1) For Outlook Express: View, Layout, deselect "Show preview pane".
(The only way an e-mail can be previewed is for Outlook Express to open it.)
(2) you can visually inspect an e-mail in Outlook Express by selecting it from
the message list and displaying its properties via Alt+Enter, or via
right clicking it and selecting properties, or via (menu) File, Properties.
From Properties, Details tab, select Message Source ... you can then
maximize the message window and scan it (you'll be looking at plain text)
for suspicious content.
(3) if you have determined your message is safe to open, you can open it
and via File, Save As, you can safe it as a .eml file to a folder and then
go to that folder and scan the single message.
(4) if your message has attachments, you can from step (3) save them to
a folder via (menu) File, Save Attachments, then go to that folder and
scan the attachment(s).
(5) if your scanning software does not scan inside of .zip files and an
attachment is a .zip file, you can unzip the attachment to a folder
and scan the contents of that folder.

Just because a file scans as virus free, that does not mean that it actually
is virus free. I've had such files scan first as virus free and then two to
four weeks later, they were detected as virus files ... virus files spread
so fast today that sometimes the anti-virus software only detects them
later ... a new virus can spread widely via the Internet on the first day
it's release "into the wild".

Even if your e-mail is safe, it could contain a LINK to an UNSAFE web site.
