Be fair, win98 was never desinged to run 24/7, if you are looking for
something that must run 24/7, either looking for Linux or at least win2k. I
won't recommend XP at the moment, since it's not released long enough to
prove itself. at work, we use win2k on workstations, and we don't need
reboot for months, even we do need to reboot, usually we were doing upgarde
(software) that requires to do so. my workstation might have been rebooted
most of time - about once a month, that's because my workstation also serves
as a very special "server", and it is really hard for my poor machine (only
128M RAM, I sometimes reboot it to clean memory in case we experience
problems on its special tasks).

There is one thing you should pay attation if you choose win2k - the
hardware drivers installed can cause a lot of troubles if their quality
ain't good.

Before you change another OS, you need to get rid of any hardware problems.
You may do some tests on current PC, I recommend:
1) run Prime95 for at least 24 hours, that will test both CPU and RAM
2) run 3Dmark for at least 24 hours, if you need to test AGP bus/video card
3) download and run HDD diag (for your brand of drive) if you need to test
the hard drive
4) try a new power supply, if you still experience shut down problem after
all tests were passed.
*Test 1 and 2 will also pick up most of mobo problem if there is any*
