<<<< HI there
What is a rootkit and how would I investigate it?
Thanks for your help >>>>
Hi,
(1) "rootkit" is essentially a technology (bad) that makes it possible to hide files, registry entries etc RELATING to a piece of malware/spyware injected into your system to monitor the users activities.in short it makes the task of detection by anti malware/spyware utilities that much more difficult.
(2)there is a utility called "rootkit revealer" available for download at the following URL
http://tinyurl.com/7btyk
HAVING SAID THIS PL.NOTE I DO NOT HAVE ANY PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE OF THIS UTILITY AND ITS EFFECTIVENESS AND EVEN WHETHER IT IS GOOD OR BAD. BUT THE "WEBSITE"
"SYSINTERNALS" IS A TRUSTED SITE AND I HOPE OTHER MEMBERS WILL VOUCH FOR THIS.
(3)from your post, though it is clear that you have accessed "sony's" help nevertheless i am copy/pasting their article no C347922 which suggests disabling all background programs including antivirus/firewall applications.
"Knowledge Article C347922
Unable to install or download the SonicStage® software.
Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if you are unable to install or download the SonicStage® software.
IMPORTANT: The installation must be performed while logged in as Administrator or to an account with Administrator rights when using the Microsoft® Windows® 2000 professional or XP operating system.
Verify that the computer meets the system requirements to run the SonicStage® software.
Close all programs before starting the installation process.
NOTE: Temporarily disable any antivirus software that may be running before starting the installation process.
In some instances, the installation appears to have stopped. This can happen if an installation dialogue box gets hidden behind the install window. Press and hold the ALT key and then press the TAB key until the dialogue box appears and then continue with the installation.
A missing file may cause the installation to stop. An error may occur when the SonicStage® 2.x or 3.x software is trying to uninstall a previous version of the OpenMG™ Jukebox or SonicStage® software and a file is missing or corrupt. If this issue occurs, reinstall the original version of the OpenMG™ Jukebox or SonicStage® software using the original installation CD and then start the SonicStage® 2.x or 3.x software installation process again.
Depending on the computer and the CD drive capabilities, the installation may take more than 30 minutes.
** Information regarding upgrading to the latest version of Sony's music management software is available at the Digital Music Player Support Web site at http://www.sony.com/walkmansupport. Please note system requirements prior to upgrading your current application."
HTH and good luck----Venkat
