Hi everyone,

My husband has had to reformat his hard disk three times(!) after running
Win98's ScanDisk. When allowing it to fix disk errors, the following has
happened each time: a) it renamed all folders to .x (as shown on the Start
menu as Explorer wouldn't even open); b) when ScanDisk ran in DOS mode, it
changed all folders to DIR0000x (where x was a number), none of which were
accessible. ScanDisk for DOS also reported that the FAT was bad. (ScanDisk
for DOS launched automatically when he booted from the Install diskette for
Win98.) My husband has a hunch that ScanDisk for Windows screwed up the
FAT. We're running FAT32, BTW. After each of these disasters, Windows would
not boot, reporting a nonsystem disk (i.e., the hard disk) or disk error.

Needless to say, I refuse to allow ScanDisk to fix errors on my own system
which is almost identical (hardware and software) to my husband's. (I've
had other Win98 disasters on my system requiring reinstallation twice, but
that's a story for another message someday.) Here are our system specs:

Pentium II MMX--266Mhz (Intel)
6.4Gig hard drives (Quantum Fireball ST)
SpaceWalker HOT-637 motherboard
Award Modular BIOS
Ensoniq 64-bit sound cards
96Meg RAM (on hubby's machine), 128Meg on my machine
ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP video cards (4Meg)
Iomega Zip drive
Toshiba 32x CD-ROM drive

We have Ultra DMA and bus mastering dual IDE enabled.

Win98 is generally very unstable on both of our machines. Apps that ran
fine under Win95 crash or operate unusually under Win98. I've even
experienced crashes and errors when simply shutting down Windows! Win98,
BTW, came installed on both of our machines when purchased, so it's a clean
install, not an upgrade. We have Norton AntiVirus (latest version)
installed on both machines and keep it updated by downloading the latest
virus signatures from Symantec. No virus was ever detected on either machine.

Has anyone here heard of this particular horror story? Better yet, can
anyone shed light on the cause and prevention of this disaster? TIA.

Lynn
