A friend of mine is having a problem with AOL... Since I have not
really used the program (no local numbers for my part of Maine) I
was wondering if anyone would know what I could do to help him.
Here is his description...
I had downloaded AOL 5.0 for a trial and liked it really
Well... and since I only have 16 of ram I wanted to get rid
Of AOL 4.0 and to do it without any mistakes . . . So, I called
AOL tech support. And the next 5 techs said that the first
One led me through a very, very incorrect procedure as they
Tried to help me by re-doing 4.0 and 5.0 several times. They
Inform me that the problem is now with my windows files
And not their AOL files and so I am on my own and that "they
Are sorry for their tech's error" !
The AOL tech support person had me right mouse click the
File in my windows explorer and click delete. I questioned
The wisdom of this and the fact that the AOL 4.0 folder had
An "install program" for the new AOL 5.0. He told me to get
Rid of it and that everything was already in the new trial
program. It
Appears that the 2 programs were sharing
The organize files from the 4.0. [ however, I did have the
forethought to
Ignore him and copy & paste the install 5.0
File to a new folder on the desktop anyway] .
Now, the problem with the AOL set-up is that the address
Book, favorites & the file cabinet is all in one file in the
Hard drive and not smaller separate ones. That would
Have made backup a cinch. With everything in one file, it
Had gotten to big ( 6,240kb ) to put on a disk. I have been
Working on cleaning everything up and deleting so that
It would be small enough for a disk.
And the 6,240kb organize file is apparently now damaged
Beyond repair after recovering it from my recycle bin.
It contained my entire address book (personal, business, coda
etc.),
My entire file cabinet (with everything in it including some
orders),
And all my hyperlinks to all my research and everything.
The icon for this file is no longer a "window" one but a
Rectangle that I don't recognize.
My question now is this . . . Is there a way to re-convert
This file to something that is recognized??????? Robbie
If anyone can tell me how to recover his files, I would really
appreciate it!
