Hi, 

this suggests that there has been a change in your e-mail client???

outlook, outlook express, eudora etc etc or somehow there is a change in the mail client configuration within this past 3 months or so

this can be answered only if we know the file extension of the attachment.

for example XYZ.DOC,,, XYZ.PDF,,,, XYZ.PPS

the XYZ stands for the name of the "attached" file and the .DOC,, .PDF... .PPS

are known as file extensions.

.doc will need microsoft word,(or something similar) .pdf will need adobe reader (or similar) applications.

hereagain it is not clear whether you have uninstalled any such needed applications within the past 3 months or so....
