I have an update to my earlier post.  Right after writing that post I tried
my utilities again the first time since reinstalling IE 5.5.  Even though I
had been told there could be no correlation both scandisk and disk cleanup
ran perfectly for the first time in weeks.  Defrag stopped at 35%, but at
least I am somewhat optimistic, if totally puzzled.  I feel I am on the
right track but still need to get it to defrag all the way.
