Paul,

In a word, yes.

First you need to create the footer.
Click VIEW -- HEADERS AND FOOTERS
click the button to switch to the footer.

Now create the code to insert the filename
Click INSERT -- FIELD...
On the left side, select DOCUMENT INFORMATION
On the right side, click FILENAME
in the text box at the bottom you can add a slash-P ( /P )
if you want the path included with the name.

Lastly, save this as your normal template.
Click FILE -- SAVE AS
change the FILES OF TYPE to TEMPLATES
then save the file as
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\NORMAL.DOT
(or whatever your path is to the office folder).

NORMAL.DOT is the collection of commands that Word
automatically performs each time you create a new document,
so.... you can change the font, change the point size, change the
text color, add a watermark, --- almost anything you want, within
the NORMAL.DOT file and Word will always recreate those items
(at least until you change the template again)
