Absolutely!
I don't mind paying a REASONABLE price for software. In fact, if I like a
free version, I often buy the paid version (IF its price is REASONABLE)
because I like to support good software (I was a programmer before I
retired).

That said, however, AVAST, maybe AVG, and maybe (I can't remember) Zone
Alarm, not only charge for the paid version of the software, BUT they ALSO
want you to pay AGAIN every year for the virus (or whatnot) "signatures" or
"definitions" "subscription!!" I would be willing to buy the software, but
not to continue paying and paying and paying every single year for the
definitions that the free-version-users are getting for free. I think they
shot themselves in the foot with that "subscription" business.

Spywareblaster has the right idea. The software is FREE and you can update
"definitions" for free - manually.
If you want an "autoupdate subscription" where the "definitions database" is
updated for you automatically then the cost is a REASONABLE $9.95 per year.
I do think the method sort of sucks, it takes time to phone home at every
single bootup to see if new stuff is available, especially if you are
RE-booting for some reason. It would be better if it had enough sense (like
ERUNT) to do it ONCE PER DAY at first bootup, instead. And of course, if
you don't reboot every day, then you don't get the updates every day, unless
you run the program and update manually.

Hi Linda and Others,

From all indications, my previous post on this subject made it to the
archives but was not distributed to the list. I have inserted it below to
include a link for the AVG Free download page.

For Grisoft, and other companies, to focus your attention on the products
they sell is nothing more than good business practice. While doing this, the
free products they offer are less conspicuous and you sometimes have to look
for them. Products vary and, before purchase,

I would suggest anyone evaluate the advantages and/or additional features of
a paid version over the free version. Then determine in their opinion if the
cost is warranted.

Grisoft has a basic comparison between the free and commercial versions on
this page:

Hi Linda,

GRISOFT will continue to offer the AVG free version for home use. They are
replacing version 7.1 with 7.5 which has been updated, has a new look, and
is compatible with Windows Vista. The new version is available now and
version 7.1 will be discontinued on 15 January 2007. Present users are being
notified over a period of time so as to not overload the servers and give
everyone ample time to upgrade. If you haven't received a notice, you should
over the next few weeks. Of course, you can download the new version and
upgrade at any time without waiting to be notified.
