My 600x390x16m colors JPG files (set at 50% quality) run about 32K.
I do my original scans at 100dpi (for the WEB), and 24 bit color.
That seems to be a good place to start for my image program.
I scan directly into Office97Pro Photo Editor, (an option on a custom install),
and while not the very best, it does better size-wise than my scanner software
and you can edit picture to a certain pixel size easily.
This is for a personal WEB site...
