Although I know nothing about Linux OS <yet>, assuming that the it has a
GUI, and that Netscape has kept it's GUI basically platform
independent::

There are very small vertical and horizontal panels, embedded in the
center of each frame border of the main window box (where mail
subject/sender/date are displayed).
  When all window frames are expanded, they point down (click to conceal
msg body auto display), and left (click to hide mail folders)...
I have only been using PR2 for a few days, but (assuming all interfaces
are equal) you probably have inadvertantly clicked one of those arrow
bars.
