I have received in the past, while working at a comercial shop, many drives
in exchange (in other words, the customer says trash them!) for new ones.
Quite a few were so full and fragmented they crashed when booting. Many
would become so hot you could cook eggs on them! All I needed to do was
FDISK and Format: instantly fixed. Today I have several clients with 120 to
300 gig drives used in a video production business. Their systems run
measurably slower and unstable untill I showed them how to defrag every
other day. Now I do not subscribe to the hype and doomsayers at Executive
Software (Diskeeper), but a defrag will improve performance for an average
user over time. My 2 centavos.
