Hi Brian,
It's not unusual to come across applications that rely on a specific version
of Java.
The "fault" - if you want to call it that, lies in the lack of programming
expertise at APC,
to make their software compatible with Java, regardless of version. It's in
the way they call the classes.

Be that as it may - I've collected some links that may be useful to you.
I ran into those issues a while ago and at that time got a personal answer
from Java Support.
Since then, several of those queries are answered on the following pages.
For older versions go here:
http://java.sun.com/products/archive/
Look for JDK/JRE -5.0 Update 19

The difference between JDK and JRE
http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/jre_jdk.xml

Q.) Can I remove the older versions and do I need multiple versions
of Java installed on my system?
http://java.com/en/download/faq/remove_olderversions.xml
Quote: " You can also keep older versions of Java installed, in case you
have an applet/application that still depends upon a previous version."

If the APC software can't find the "Path" you may have to set it ,manually.
How do I set or change the PATH system variable?
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/path.xml

In summary - Yes,you can install Java v5.0 ,but I would also keep -or
re-install the latest version of Java v6.0.
As always, set a Restore Point or better, do a complete backup or best >
create an image
with one of your imaging programs and observe that things are working
properly.
If there are conflicts, take note of them.
Since the computer is new, you're still entitled to Dell support.

My personal opinion - In the event that things don't work out - Write APC
and request they provide you with a patch or updated software to be able to
work with Java v6.0.
They may be a large company, but Sun is larger and if they (APC) want to keep
their customers, they'd better smarten up and code their software to be less
reliant on a particular
version of Java. All this of course if there are conflicts.
In general tho, different versions of Java work well alongside eachother.

Hope this helps.
