The second line, as you have it written would append all the files in this
directory to your log file. Not what you want.
delete >>a:, etc from this line. Putting this in there would concetenate all
the files together and you couldn't use any of them.
Yes, there is a way to write date and time stamps to a log file. I have it
in a book somewhere, and I'll look it up. This is used for a number of
things, like checking to see if your computer has been run today.
