I don't remember much about the incident except the
machine was pretty 'hosed' and I tried removing
MS IE 4.0x as a last resort. (I think my >thoughts were
to remove and re-install). At any rate, MS Support talked
me though a fairly complicated recovery involving
deleting various files.
