It scans both inbound and outbound messages
and you can't turn it off. Sometimes annoying when
you send large messages or there is some problems
with Avast!. It scans also Usenet messages. You can
see it when You look message headers. In your message
how I received it is

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0515-2, 15.04.2005), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean
