Becky, you need a drive that can by written to dynamically. A DVDR or CDR
are not such drives. They require special software to write to them, and
often they come with their own backup utilities that you might use. It is
also possible to have special device drivers that make the DVD or CD look
like a regular writable drive (I know that there are such drivers for CD,
but am not sure of DVD). It may be possible (not sure) that the XP backup
utility will work with such drivers.

If you want to back up to a DVD, I would recommend one of two procedures you
may use. If you use XP Backup, create a .bkf file on another hard drive.
Then record this file onto the DVD using your DVD writing software. This
process, however, is slow and clumsy. Perhaps you should use some backup
software that is specifically designed to back up to a DVD.

It is possible that I am overlooking some feature that Microsoft may have to
allow XP Backup to write to a DVD, but I am not familiar with any such
technique.

I am trying to backup everything on my computer using the Backup Wizard in
XP. I put in a new blank DVD in the CD drive (E:) When prompted I put in
this location for the backup to go. But then I get this message:

The backup file name could not be used.
   "E:\Backup.bkf"
Please ensure this is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access.
