The free Microsoft Antivirus is called "Security Essentials"
Can be downloaded at:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx
An excellent free PC scan is found at:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
That site has found mischief makers that even Malwarebytes missed.
I always advise people to change the file name of downloaded AV or Malware
files as some pesky Malware can detect them and corrupt the files.
I would like to share a real life story:
A former customer wanted a "Cheap" computer for one of her doctors.
He had a "Computer Whiz Buddy" build him a $600 machine. They installed AVG
9.0 and the machine ran real slow, (took 20 to 60 minutes to boot).
I looked at the system file and the Whiz Kid threw together an antique Dell
PC100 Bus system with a PII or PIII Processor and 256 or 512 Mb RAM (It has
been 2 years & I do not remember for sure). With Win XP Pro SP3 with Office
7 Pro. LOL no wonder the machine was so slow. And the guy locked the admin
access and BIOS so only he could get into it... for a fee!
The Moral of the story, be weary of "Good Deals" and Know what you are
buying!

Subject: [?? Probable Spam] Re: Virus in AVG? possibly fixed
Thanks guys! I appreciate the help.
It seems to be fixed. Apparently it was a conflict issue. I restored
my computer back to the set date September 14th; that got rid of the
latest Firefox update and whatever was jamming the scan.
I had to download the new AVG license at the library; it was 124
megabytes and took over half an hour to download even there! Imagine
how long that would take at 52 Kbps?! LOL! Peter, I'm going to save
that CD but I am also going to look into Avira and/or Vipre as you
suggest. Then I will request my money back from AVG; you're right, it
has become a memory hog.
Wasn't there a very effective "free" antivirus put out by Microsoft
though? The name of it slips my mind...
